He said so … Back to Basics … Light

Even those who have never set foot in a church have heard the phrase, ‘Light to the world.’ But do we really know what that means? Is it something we actually put into practice on a regular basis? Let’s find out.

14 “You are the light of [Christ to] the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good deeds and moral excellence, and [recognize and honor and] glorify your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5

The first thought which came to my mind was, it’s really not a choice. A city set on a hill cannot hide. We don’t really decide to be a light – we have to decide NOT to be a light. It’s like deciding to tear down the city so it wouldn’t be seen anymore. hmmm

The light we are to be is one which is seen, not hidden. It is to be given to all, not some. How we shine is through good deeds, works, acts. And why we shine is to bring glory to God, not to ourselves.

Short and too the point, this one is. But boy should it make us all thing. We can not accomplish this instruction sitting in our safe place at home, nor by occupying a pew somewhere. So think about this one. Ask yourself:

Am I doing good deeds, works, and acts out in the open, toward any who cross my path? And is what I am doing bringing glory to God?
